Wood decking adds timeless beauty and warmth to any outdoor space, but how long does it actually last? The answer depends on several factors: the wood species, its treatment, climate, maintenance, and exposure to the elements. At Thermory, we believe that premium wood decking can stand the test of time both structurally and aesthetically.
There’s something deeply calming about stepping barefoot onto a real wood deck. It’s pleasantly warm in the sun, cool under the shade, and smooth with just the right amount of texture beneath your feet.
Unlike synthetic materials, natural wood offers a genuine, sensory experience. It ages gracefully and even becomes more beautiful with each season. It’s a choice rooted in tradition but elevated by modern technology. When you choose real wood, you’re choosing a material that feels as good as it looks.
Thermory thermowood products are engineered for superior durability and dimensional stability without the use of chemicals. The thermal modification process uses only heat and steam to alter the wood’s structure, increasing resistance to rot, fungi, and insects.
Thermally modified wood decking doesn’t accumulate heat. This means it doesn’t overheat in the sun and feels pleasant underfoot. The smooth finish of thermory products provides a splinter-free, comfortable deck.
Thermowood decking is also easy to maintain and comes with simple installation options.
Wood species are classified into durability classes based on their resistance to biological decay. These range from Class 1 (very durable) to Class 5 (not durable). Thermory’s decking products fall into Class 1 and 2 depending on the wood species, making them a top choice for long-lasting outdoor structures.

Thermo-ash is a standout among hardwood decking options. After thermal modification, ash achieves a durability Class 1 rating, making it comparable with tropical hardwoods like ipe or teak. With proper installation and maintenance, it can last 25+ years.
Thermo-ash decking productsPine is a responsibly harvested softwood that becomes highly durable through thermal modification. It offers durability of Class 2, meaning its expected lifespan is 15+ years when properly maintained.
Thermo-pine decking productsSpruce, sourced from sustainably managed forests, is also a great option for decking. It reaches durability Class 1 after thermal treatment, meaning it has 25+ years’ protection against wood decay.
Thermo-spruce decking productsProper maintenance is essential for maximizing the lifespan of your wood decking. After installing your decking, it’s important that you keep the surface free of leaves, needles and other moisture-retaining debris that can promote mold.
Floral fertilizers, household chemicals, grilling stains, wine, drinks and sauces can all leave stains on the surface, while dog claws, high heels and other everyday items can scratch the boards. Most of these fade over time and become less noticeable. Deeper scratches and stains can be removed with light sanding; when sanding an oiled terrace, a new layer of oil must be applied.
Regular maintenance and oiling improve the deck’s appearance and ease of cleaning. While frequency of maintenance varies based on factors such as climate, environment, application, color preference, and oil used, reapplying oil once a year is typically sufficient to maintain weather resistance and wood tone.

All natural wood decking, including Thermory’s, will change color over time when exposed to UV light. The initial rich tones will naturally weather to a beautiful silvery gray if left untreated.
This process is purely aesthetic and does not affect the wood’s durability. Many embrace the natural evolution of their deck while others choose to preserve the original color with UV-protective oils.
So, how long does wood decking last? With Thermory’s thermally modified wood, your deck can serve you easily for a decade or more. Whether you prefer the elegance of ash or the rugged charm of pine or spruce, Thermory offers a decking solution that meets your needs and exceeds expectations.
