Thermory’s Kodiak cladding range can be used to create a particularly rugged and natural atmosphere. Its sturdy boards, with their brushed texture, are inspired by the majestic Kodiak brown bear and represent the harsh, wild charm of the Alaskan forests, its natural habitat.

The Kodiak range is made with spruce that has been thermally modified using only heat and steam. Modified right through to the core, the boards are dimensionally stable and offer rot resistance for at least 25 years if correctly installed. Kodiak boards provide a natural and rustic feel alongside the first-class qualities that come with thermally modified wood.

Spruce produces less resin

Norway spruce (Picea abies) is a coniferous tree of the pine family in the genus Picea, that is widespread in Europe.
Without any treatment, spruce wood is lightweight, soft and almost white in color with medium mechanical properties. Spruce splits more easily than pine but it is less resinous. The wood is very well suited for thermal modification, which makes it significantly more durable and stable while also giving it a beautiful golden-brown tone.

The tone of the wood changes over the course of time.

Thermal modification makes the tone of spruce wood a beautiful golden brown. A brushed finish will further highlight the depth and pattern of the wood.

As with any other wood, the surface of thermally modified spruce will acquire a natural silver grey colour over time. This process starts immediately after the products are installed and can take a few months to several years depending on how much UV light they are exposed to. The durability of the boards is not affected.

Wall cladding maintenance To oil or not to oil?

Thermally modified wall cladding does not necessarily require surface treatment. However, if you would like to preserve or change the tone of thermally modified wood, we recommend oiling the boards before installation using UV-resistant oil and repeating the oiling process every 3 years. The oil should be applied only to clean, level, dust-free surfaces. Before applying oil to the whole cladding, test it on a small piece of wood using a small quantity of oil. Observe the oil manufacturer’s instructions.

Three recommendations for installing Kodiak Thermo-Spruce wall cladding

The right installation techniques are extremely important to make your panelling last for a long time.

  • For the substructure, we recommend using joists of thermally modified spruce of durability class 1. This way the substructure will endure just as long as the panelling itself.
  • By choosing wall cladding with matching tongue-and-groove ends, you can install boards of different lengths with the least possible time, material costs and labour input. Any two boards do not necessarily have to meet directly over a joist.
  • When using screws for installation, screw heads must not be forced too deeply into the wood. The screw heads must be almost flush with the wood surface to avoid water penetration.
