Our highest A grade material goes through rigorous quality control, where each board is checked and passed through optimisation where defects are cut out during production and grading, helping to minimize project site installation waste, reduce onsite sorting and deliver a greater visual consistency in the finished facade or deck and significant savings through less waste and less extra boards purchased. This production philosophy naturally affects production yield and pricing, but it also creates long-term value through smoother installation, predictable quality and customer satisfaction.

“To us, premium quality is not only about how the finished product looks, but also about how reliably it performs during installation and how well it meets the end user needs,” says Joel Pihlak, Quality Manager at Thermory. “A true premium grade requires active grading and defect removal throughout production. That is what helps minimize waste and ensures customers receive material with highly consistent appearance and quality.”

A changing thermowood market 

Over the last several years, the thermowood market has expanded significantly. New suppliers and modification technologies have entered the market.  

At the same time, different production philosophies have emerged. In most cases, thermo-treated raw material is simply planed pack-to-pack with no grading intervention or defect removal. This has naturally created lower-priced commercial-grade offerings in the market. 

Through customer discussions and market feedback, Thermory recognized that there is also demand for a more commercially competitive alternative within our own assortment, particularly in segments where the highest visual perfection is not essential, installation labour is relatively affordable, installers prefer to optimize material onsite themselves and price sensitivity plays a larger role in purchasing decisions.  

Introducing the new Thermory AB grade 

To serve the changing market needs, rather than to ignore these, Thermory has expanded its thermo-pine grading structure with a new AB grade. 

Importantly, the new AB grade should not be viewed as a compromise, but rather as a practical and market-driven addition to the Thermory assortment. Compared to our premium A grade, the AB grade more generously allows natural wood characteristics such as knots and other visual variations that naturally occur in timber. At the same time, it maintains the high Thermory standards for thermal modification, mechanical processing, and guaranteed biological durability that customers expect from our products. 

“For us, the most important thing is helping customers choose the right material for the right application,” says Maret Puskar, Head of Exterior Sales at Thermory. “Some projects require maximum visual consistency and installation efficiency, while others prioritize commercial competitiveness. With the new AB grade, we can now serve both needs more clearly and transparently.” 

Understanding the Thermory thermo-pine grades 

To better support different project needs, installation approaches and budget expectations, Thermory thermo-pine is now available in three distinct grades. This grade structure allows Thermory customers to choose the quality level that best matches their project priorities, installation approach and budget expectations. 

Transparency has always been part of Thermory quality 

As the thermowood market continues to evolve and new modification technologies and suppliers enter the industry, we believe it is increasingly important that customers clearly understand what quality they are actually purchasing and what that quality means in practice. Managing customer expectations is increasingly important. 

At Thermory, we believe transparency is part of premium quality. That is why we openly publish our detailed grading rules and clearly communicate what is and is not allowed in each grade. 

Professional suppliers should be able to explain:

how the material is graded

what level of natural variation and defects can be expected

what installation efficiency the customer can realistically expect

provide technical documentation to support the product’s biological durability and performance

In addition to grading transparency, customers should always request supporting technical documentation such as Declaration of Performance (DoP) and proof of biological durability testing according to EN 350:2016.

In Haapsalu’s historic wooden district, Summer Villa reinterprets Estonia’s lace-like timber heritage with modern precision. Clad in Thermory thermo-ash shingles and thermo-radiata pine panels, the villa captures the silvery tones of coastal light while large openings and sliding shutters dissolve the threshold between indoors and out.

The jury praised its “fresh, contemporary interpretation of historic wooden architecture” and “innovative use of wood,” noting that the project finds “the right level of crazy” in its fearless craftsmanship. Among the pine forests of Lahemaa National Park, the Võsu Primary School and Kindergarten redefines rural educational architecture. Designed by 3+1 Architects, the elongated, barn-like structure combines CLT, glulam, and Thermory thermo-pine across façades, soffits, and terraces. Its dark, brushed cladding and oiled wooden elements lend depth and warmth to the minimalist form.

The jury commended the project’s “architectural slimness and sense of lightness,” observing that the “roof seems to float above the landscape.” They also highlighted its emotional resonance – “wonderful that children can experience such a warm, inviting atmosphere in a school.”

By reinterpreting local building traditions through contemporary timber design, Võsu School establishes a powerful dialogue between past and present.

Inspired by Wabi Sabi principles, Jõelähtme Juveel captures quiet elegance through imperfection. Nestled by a golf course, its interiors pair Thermory thermo-ash walls with limewashed ceilings and light CLT surfaces to create a calm, cohesive space.

The jury admired the home’s “exquisite use of wood – like elegant clothing,” praising the craftsmanship that conceals complex detailing behind an effortless appearance. Hidden doors, refined joints, and the visual continuation of thermo-pine ceilings from bathrooms to the exterior canopy blur boundaries between inside and out, offering what the jury called “a sense of roughness in the most elegant way.”

In transforming the Baltimore Ravens’ iconic “Castle,” ZGF Architects designed a wellness and recovery environment that redefines athletic performance spaces. Featuring Thermory Thermo-Magnolia in custom ceiling and sauna applications, the interiors merge biophilic design with advanced functionality.

The jury described the project as “immersive and sensory – you can almost feel the water and the scent of wood,” praising its “clean, refined detailing” and “beautiful use of natural light.” Beyond technical mastery, the space evokes calm and connection – “a powerful, restorative environment that feels impressive.”

Special mention

Innovative products such as Wemel Wood’s precision-crafted extension cords and cable conduits, and Nukka Kitchen’s bold outdoor kitchen concepts, impressed the jury for expanding how thermowood can be used in product design.

The impressive entrance structure, resembling a large ship’s hull, is supported by thin pillars, making weight a critical consideration. The jury was particularly impressed by the bold form and innovative use of wood, which together create a striking visual impact. Cozy and welcoming, the renewed business lounge at Tallinn Airport showcases a design rooted in Estonian origins. Most of the elements in the space are locally sourced, forming a crucial foundation for the concept, including lime plaster walls, natural limestone, and Thermory’s thermally modified wood used in the furniture and wall panels. Additionally, a custom thermally modified veneer was produced for this project.

The jury noted how each element of the design contributes to the overall narrative, weaving a cohesive story throughout the space. All the details are meticulously thought through, and the use of natural materials fosters a warm and inviting atmosphere, creating a modern yet welcoming environment. It serves as a beautifully designed business card for Estonia.

The exterior and interior are clad in cedar and complemented by alder wood benches, both which add a warm, natural ambiance to the space. The blend of modern design, natural materials, and the beauty of the forest creates an ideal environment for relaxation and rejuvenation.

The jury appreciated the design’s embrace of simplicity, which beautifully complements the stunning location. It truly feels as though this sauna offers a holistic experience, nurturing both mind and body, and encompassing all the elements necessary for relaxation.

Do you have a favorite amongst our products?

We like all Thermory products at Maguinor Maderas, even those that we haven’t yet introduced to our local market. Their design department puts in a lot of hard work and effort, which is clearly visible in the well-designed, high-quality products they create. However, I think that personally I’d have to choose Kodiak cladding, which was the product that opened the way for us to introduce Thermory in Uruguay.

And finally, what sets Thermory apart?

Quality

After years working with thermally treated products, we know how to tell when the raw material selection is adequate, the process has been done well and the post-treatment material selection is appropriate. Thermory’s development of thermal modification furnace programming is carried out by internal specialists, backed by years and years of experience. I believe that this specialization and continuous improvement is fundamental to Thermory’s quality levels.

Design

With Thermory, everything is simply perfect, from the products to the marketing materials. There is a special attention to detail, which we value highly.

Innovation

And finally, innovation – we constantly see Thermory launching new, groundbreaking products that don’t resemble anything being done by anyone else. After a few months of course, the competition launches similar products, but by that point Thermory is already innovating again with something new. I believe that’s what it’s all about – being different. Being the ones who take the time and effort to study the market needs with architects and designers, and then to develop products that genuinely meet that demand. Although it’s easier for others to imitate these developments once they’ve been accomplished by Thermory, this path of innovation is extremely enriching for the company, as well as for its distributors and customers.

While incorporating wood in small dwellings may be relatively straightforward, the architectural arena for large-scale public buildings introduces an entirely different set of challenges and regulations, including strict fire retardant properties. This achievement underscores a commendable mastery over the complexities of employing wood in monumental structures.

Inspired by a profound appreciation for the opulent beauty of the Carpathian nature, the genesis of this hotel concept seamlessly blends architectural sophistication with organic integration into the surrounding landscape, forming a structure that mimics the grace of a rock adorned with cascading plant formations. Throughout the hotel, from its lobby to the restaurants and rooms, refined decorative elements serve as a visual narrative, offering a design interpretation that pays homage to the rich history of local craft traditions.

For YOD Group, this project stands as an essential milestone, drawing upon the culmination of 19 years of experience, knowledge, and skill. The goal was to authentically showcase the essence of the Carpathian locality, intertwining the external space of the hotel with its intrinsic character. Employing a restrained palette, intelligent design solutions, and an emphasis on comfort, the project aims to create an immersive experience in nature, leaving unnecessary elements behind the scenes.

The use of Thermory Drift boards in tandem with raw wood forms a skillful dialogue, resulting in a cozy interior where material processing techniques enhance the overall quality of the space. The visual impact of the design evokes a dreamlike ambience, transporting observers to a realm seemingly detached from reality—an aesthetic befitting a truly exceptional hotel.

The concept originated from a vision of a mobile sauna seamlessly attachable to a trailer—an innovative fusion of sauna and mobility, giving birth to the captivating notion of a #saunaonwheels. The interior is exclusively dedicated to the sauna experience, while the exterior cleverly incorporates practical service areas, including cabinets, shelves, and a bar.

In its eight months of existence, the mobile sauna has fulfilled its purpose of uniting communities. People have converged for sauna sessions by the lake, at parties, trade shows, and both summer and winter festivals, proving the versatility of this unique concept. It’s become a dynamic hub for shared experiences, transforming any occasion into a sauna celebration.

The jury’s verdict echoes the spirit of the project—unexpected, fun, and playfully designed. This innovative creation not only redefines the conventional sauna experience but also adds an element of mobility, fostering a sense of community and shared enjoyment.
