Woodmaster began working with Thermory in 2016, when the company started purchasing materials from a Thermory partner in Hungary. The connection was strengthened when Haserv, an Estonian supplier Woodmaster already sourced wood from, merged with Thermory, creating a direct relationship between the two companies.

How has the market for thermally modified wood evolved in Slovakia?

When Woodmaster started out, there was little awareness in Slovakia of thermal modification and its benefits, like increased durability, weather resistance and sustainability. We persevered however, patiently educating potential customers on its environmental and practical benefits.

Part of our strategy involved engaging with architects, whose influence helped us increase understanding of the role of thermally modified wood in construction and design. Over time, we’ve helped to raise awareness of the material’s value, particularly for saunas, where its resistance to moisture and temperature changes is a major advantage. We continue to advocate for thermally modified wood, with a focus on sustainability and long-term performance.

How did Woodmaster become the Thermory distributor in Slovakia?

Woodmaster’s collaboration with Thermory began through our relationship with Skandináv Fatelep, a Thermory partner based in Hungary that we already sourced materials from. Through this connection, we were introduced to Thermory’s high-quality products and we were immediately impressed by not only the product range, but also the company’s culture and treatment of its partners. The trust and professionalism they showed us has played a key role in the lasting partnership we’ve built since then.

How is Woodmaster helping to build sauna culture in Slovakia?

A sauna market cannot grow faster than the sauna culture underneath it. People have to experience good löyly before they can recognize what a well-built sauna actually is, and long before they are ready to invest in one of their own. Supplying excellent material is only half the job; the other half is creating the occasions where people meet that material properly.

That is why I co-founded the Slovak Sauna Community, a Slovak civic association dedicated to promoting sauna culture and educating the public about the lifestyle around it. Its first initiative was SaunaLab, a community sauna space in Bratislava with five mobile saunas on the shore of Zlaté piesky lake, where visitors cool down directly in the water rather than under a shower. Woodmaster supports the association as a founding partner.

Woodmaster also co-organizes Parný Rozkvet, “Steam Bloom”, a sauna festival in Bratislava combining saunas, sauna rituals, breathwork, sound healing and a cultural program in a single day. We run it together with Pixxla, a sauna operator and one of our own clients.

Beyond our own events, we take saunas to festivals across Slovakia and the Czech Republic. These have included Festival Atmosféra in Slovakia, a music festival that also promotes wellness and healthy living; Hacker Camp in the Czech Republic, a gathering blending technology and outdoor living, including recreational activities like saunas; and Hiki Joki in Hradec Králové, another Czech festival that celebrates outdoor pursuits. We have also delivered saunas as part of brand experiences, including Zimný Grape, the winter edition of the Grape festival in Slovakia, where we brought a mobile sauna for Kofola and operated it throughout the event as part of a wellness zone with sauna rituals, run under the Slovak Sauna Community.

Events like these reach people who would never walk into a showroom, and often, it’s that first experience of a properly designed sauna that turns curiosity into genuine interest. Thermory materials are central to that work. The saunas we bring are the same ones we build for clients, so every visitor who sits in them is experiencing thermally modified wood firsthand: how it feels against the skin at temperature, how it holds up to constant heat and moisture, and how it ages. That is a far more convincing argument for thermal modification than any specification sheet we could hand someone.

What are Woodmaster’s most notable recent projects?

Sauna Bobor. Woodmaster was the implementation partner on Komunitná sauna Bobor, a public community sauna cantilevered over the water from the stern of a boat moored on the Danube in Bratislava, designed by architects Martin Šichman and Matej Kurajda. The project was nominated for CE ZA AR 2025, the annual architecture award of the Slovak Chamber of Architects, in the Phenomena of Architecture category. 

Community saunas and developers. Woodmaster is currently working on wellness experience design on several community saunas and social wellness clubs, and with real estate developers across the region. Developers increasingly understand that a well-designed shared wellness space is not just a decorative amenity, but an integral part of a residential project’s value proposition. 

A new e-shop. We recently launched eshop.woodmaster.sk, giving Slovak customers direct access to Thermory materials, from cladding and decking to sauna wood, without the delays that used to come with sourcing smaller quantities.

Why does Woodmaster invest in educating the market?

Because a market that cannot tell a good sauna from a bad one will always buy on price, and will be disappointed by what it gets. Most of the decisions that determine whether a sauna works are made long before anyone orders the wood: ventilation, heat gradients, insulation, bench ergonomics, stove sizing and the choice of material. Get those wrong and no amount of beautiful cladding will rescue the result. Several of those mistakes are irreversible once the sauna is built.

We would rather spend our time explaining how it works than persuading anyone to buy. That takes a different form for each audience.

Architects. Later this year we are running an accredited education event for architects in Bratislava together with the Slovak Chamber of Architects, “Sauna, wellness a termodrevo v architektúre”: sauna, wellness and thermally modified wood in architecture. It carries five professional development credits and covers the technical standards architects need when a sauna or a wellness space enters their project, while the drawings are still open.

Operators and builders. We spoke at the GAMB conference in the Czech Republic, dedicated to glamping and small-scale living, and brought a mobile sauna along so delegates could experience one rather than only hear about it. That audience faces the same question our sauna clients do: which materials will still be performing in year fifteen, and which only look good in year one.

We publish a free planning guide, Ako postaviť saunu, covering ten strategic decisions to make before building and the eight most common mistakes, from insulation and ventilation to bench ergonomics and choosing the right wood. What is fire retardant wood? 

Fire retardant wood is timber that has undergone a treatment designed to improve its reaction to fire.  
As a result of the treatment, the fire behaviour of the wood is improved by: 

• delayed ignition;
• slower flame spread;
• reduced heat release;
• limited smoke production;
• reduced formation of flaming droplets or particles.

It is important to distinguish fire retardant wood from non-combustible materials: 

Even after treatment, wood remains a combustible material. Fire retardant systems are designed to improve how wood behaves when exposed to fire by slowing ignition and limiting fire growth, but they do not make wood non-combustible.

How is fire performance classified? 

Different standards and classification systems are used around the world to assess the fire performance of construction products, including ASTM and NFPA standards in the United States, AS 1530 in Australia, and JIS standards in Japan. This article focuses on EN 13501-1, the European standard used to classify the reaction-to-fire performance of construction products under the Euroclass system*. 

Under EN 13501-1, construction products are classified into Euroclasses ranging from A1 to F according to their reaction to fire. In general, the lower the class, the greater the material’s contribution to fire development.

*The Euroclass reaction-to-fire classification system is defined in Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/364. within the framework of the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR)

For architects, fire classifications provide a common language for comparing products. Rather than relying on marketing claims, decisions can be based on independently tested and classified fire performance. 

These classifications are determined through standardised testing and assessment carried out by accredited laboratories.  When specifying fire retardant wood, architects should therefore always verify the product’s declared Euroclass and supporting classification documentation to ensure it meets the requirements of the intended application.  

What is the highest fire classification wood can achieve? 

The short answer is: up to Euroclass B

The longer answer is: Untreated solid wood cladding products are generally classified as Euroclass D under the European Commission’s Classification Without Further Testing (CWFT) provisions. However, fire-retardant treatment can significantly improve the reaction-to-fire performance of wood, allowing appropriately treated products to achieve up to Euroclass B. 
 
However, it is important not to assume that every fire-retardant treated wood product automatically achieves the same classification. The declared Euroclass must always be supported by an official classification report based on standardised testing of the complete product. 

What does B-s1,d0 mean? 

A Euroclass designation such as B-s1,d0 consists of three separate performance indicators. 

B – Contribution to fire 

The first letter indicates how much the material contributes to fire growth. 
Class B represents a limited contribution to fire growth compared with untreated combustible materials. 

s1 – Smoke production 

The smoke classification describes the amount of smoke generated during testing. 

• s1 = low smoke production;  

• s2 = intermediate smoke production;  

• s3 = no limitation on smoke production.

d0 – Flaming droplets 

The droplet classification evaluates the production of flaming droplets or particles. 

• d0 = no flaming droplets;  

• d1 = limited flaming droplets;  

• d2 = no performance determined.  

Together, B-s1,d0 indicates a material with limited contribution to fire growth, low smoke production and no flaming droplets under the conditions defined by the relevant European test methods.

Is Euroclass B enough?

Achieving the required Euroclass – whether this is Euroclass B or another classification – is only part of the picture.  
The declared fire classification should always be considered in relation to the intended end use of the product. For exterior use, this also means considering whether the fire-retardant treatment maintains its performance after weather exposure. This is addressed by EN 16755, which specifies additional requirements for the durability of fire performance. We explain this in more detail in our guide to fire-retardant wood for exterior use.

The UK sauna market has evolved dramatically over the past decade. How have customer expectations changed?

The market has become significantly more informed, design-conscious and technically curious. When we started over ten years ago, many people saw sauna as simply a timber room with a heater, often assuming standard construction timber would do the job.

A big part of our work has been changing that perception and helping people understand that authentic sauna design is about much more than appearance. The right materials, ventilation, heating, thermal mass, layout and löyly all work together to create the experience.

Today, customers ask much more detailed questions about timber species, durability, sustainability, maintenance and how materials perform over time. Awareness of thermally modified wood has grown considerably, particularly for outdoor saunas and premium interiors where stability and longevity really matter.

We’re also seeing customers move towards more considered, architectural sauna spaces. Darker wood tones, clean detailing, large glazing, integrated cold plunge areas and Scandinavian-inspired interiors are all becoming increasingly popular, whether for a garden sauna, a larger outdoor sauna or a bespoke home sauna.

What led Finnmark to partner with Thermory?

A changing thermowood market 

Over the last several years, the thermowood market has expanded significantly. New suppliers and modification technologies have entered the market.  

At the same time, different production philosophies have emerged. In most cases, thermo-treated raw material is simply planed pack-to-pack with no grading intervention or defect removal. This has naturally created lower-priced commercial-grade offerings in the market. 

Through customer discussions and market feedback, Thermory recognized that there is also demand for a more commercially competitive alternative within our own assortment, particularly in segments where the highest visual perfection is not essential, installation labour is relatively affordable, installers prefer to optimize material onsite themselves and price sensitivity plays a larger role in purchasing decisions.  

Introducing the new Thermory AB grade 

To serve the changing market needs, rather than to ignore these, Thermory has expanded its thermo-pine grading structure with a new AB grade. 

Importantly, the new AB grade should not be viewed as a compromise, but rather as a practical and market-driven addition to the Thermory assortment. Compared to our premium A grade, the AB grade more generously allows natural wood characteristics such as knots and other visual variations that naturally occur in timber. At the same time, it maintains the high Thermory standards for thermal modification, mechanical processing, and guaranteed biological durability that customers expect from our products.

As the thermowood market continues to evolve and new modification technologies and suppliers enter the industry, we believe it is increasingly important that customers clearly understand what quality they are actually purchasing and what that quality means in practice. Managing customer expectations is increasingly important. 

At Thermory, we believe transparency is part of premium quality. That is why we openly publish our detailed grading rules and clearly communicate what is and is not allowed in each grade. 

Professional suppliers should be able to explain:

how the material is graded

what level of natural variation and defects can be expected

what installation efficiency the customer can realistically expect

provide technical documentation to support the product’s biological durability and performance

In addition to grading transparency, customers should always request supporting technical documentation such as Declaration of Performance (DoP) and proof of biological durability testing according to EN 350:2016.

In Haapsalu’s historic wooden district, Summer Villa reinterprets Estonia’s lace-like timber heritage with modern precision. Clad in Thermory thermo-ash shingles and thermo-radiata pine panels, the villa captures the silvery tones of coastal light while large openings and sliding shutters dissolve the threshold between indoors and out.

The jury praised its “fresh, contemporary interpretation of historic wooden architecture” and “innovative use of wood,” noting that the project finds “the right level of crazy” in its fearless craftsmanship. With its distinctive geometry and attention to local tradition, the house stands as “impressive wooden architecture that blends with its surroundings – but not in a predictable way.”

Among the pine forests of Lahemaa National Park, the Võsu Primary School and Kindergarten redefines rural educational architecture. Designed by 3+1 Architects, the elongated, barn-like structure combines CLT, glulam, and Thermory thermo-pine across façades, soffits, and terraces. Its dark, brushed cladding and oiled wooden elements lend depth and warmth to the minimalist form.

The jury commended the project’s “architectural slimness and sense of lightness,” observing that the “roof seems to float above the landscape.” They also highlighted its emotional resonance – “wonderful that children can experience such a warm, inviting atmosphere in a school.”

By reinterpreting local building traditions through contemporary timber design, Võsu School establishes a powerful dialogue between past and present.

Inspired by Wabi Sabi principles, Jõelähtme Juveel captures quiet elegance through imperfection. Nestled by a golf course, its interiors pair Thermory thermo-ash walls with limewashed ceilings and light CLT surfaces to create a calm, cohesive space.

The jury admired the home’s “exquisite use of wood – like elegant clothing,” praising the craftsmanship that conceals complex detailing behind an effortless appearance. Hidden doors, refined joints, and the visual continuation of thermo-pine ceilings from bathrooms to the exterior canopy blur boundaries between inside and out, offering what the jury called “a sense of roughness in the most elegant way.”

In transforming the Baltimore Ravens’ iconic “Castle,” ZGF Architects designed a wellness and recovery environment that redefines athletic performance spaces. Featuring Thermory Thermo-Magnolia in custom ceiling and sauna applications, the interiors merge biophilic design with advanced functionality.

The jury described the project as “immersive and sensory – you can almost feel the water and the scent of wood,” praising its “clean, refined detailing” and “beautiful use of natural light.” Beyond technical mastery, the space evokes calm and connection – “a powerful, restorative environment that feels impressive.”

Special mention

Innovative products such as Wemel Wood’s precision-crafted extension cords and cable conduits, and Nukka Kitchen’s bold outdoor kitchen concepts, impressed the jury for expanding how thermowood can be used in product design.

Thermo-ash

Thermally modified ash is the most popular choice for decking. This premium hardwood is made even more durable thanks to thermal modification and is tested to have Class 1 durability, meaning 25+ years of resistance to decay. Thermal modification gives ash a rich, deep brown color which makes it the perfect alternative to tropical woods like ipe and cumaru. Ash has the same look and feel, but is a more sustainable choice.

Thermo-pine

The Nordic favourite has a very good price and quality ratio. It is more affordable than ash and has a durability of Class 2 – 15+ years of resistance to decay. When thermally modified, pine has a light, golden brown hue and is characterized by its knotty look. We source only Nordic pine, which is highly valued for its mechanical properties. This makes thermo-pine is a great substitute for Siberian larch.

Thermo-spruce

Spruce is also a solid softwood option for decking. Thermo-spruce has a color and knotty look similar to pine, but better durability. It is tested for durability Class 1 – same resistance to decay as the thermo-ash. Thermo-spruce is an affordable decking material that’s perfect for demanding climatic conditions.

Wood gives plenty of options for unique deck design. In addition to each species having a different visual look, the timber deck boards itself can be installed in different ways to achieve a desired architectural outcome. 

As thermowood decking boards as lightweight and come with straightforward installation guidelines, the wood is great to work with regardless of the size or shape of the deck. 

Key considerations for building a wood deck

• When designing a wood deck, focus on thoughtful layout planning to ensure both functionality and visual appeal. Consider how the deck will be used (entertaining, relaxing, dining), the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, sun exposure, privacy, and how the deck integrates with the existing landscape. Here are some beautiful decking projects to inspire you!

• You can decide whether you want a traditional straight layout, diagonal, or a more intricate pattern. Patterns can add architectural interest and help visually define different zones on the deck. You can also opt for decking modules that are easy to snap into place – perfect for small balconies. 

• A solid, well-prepared subframe is essential for a long-lasting deck. We recommend building the subframe in thermowood as well, so it lasts as long as the decking boards themselves.

• Proper ventilation beneath the deck is crucial to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to rot and structural issues. Ensure there is adequate clearance between the ground and the deck, and that air can circulate freely around and under the decking boards. 

• When it comes to fastening and fixing techniques, choose high-quality, stainless steel screws to securely fasten boards and prevent staining or corrosion.

Deck building essentials – hidden fixing

If you want the decking to have a clean look, we recommend using decking boards that have hidden fixing.

Thermory PaCS® Strip is an innovative fastening solution with pre-grooved boards that enable a quick and easy deck installation with no visible screw heads and automatic alignment with a gap of 5 mm between the boards and substructure beams to ensure good ventilation. The strips, which fit together end to end, each consist of six clips that allow three boards to be attached sideways onto a single joist by simply securing the strips and then clicking the boards into place.

Deck maintenance and longevity

The essence of why thermowood is the best material for decking isn’t just about the looks. Thermally modified wood has a long lifespan and, in addition, needs little maintenance besides regular cleaning. 

• No chemicals are used in the thermal modification process, only heat and steam. That also means that during the lifespan of the decking, no chemical treatments are needed. 

• Adding UV protection oil is optional. As with all wood, thermowood’s surface also naturally weathers to grey when exposed to sun, rain, snow and other elements. The more exposure, the quicker the change in color. If you are okay with the visual look of grey decking, you don’t need to oil the deck. The durability of the wood hasn’t declined. Decking oils can be used to keep the initial color of the thermowood. 

• Thermally modified boards can be simply washed with a wood cleaning product and warm water – if it’s particularly dirty you may also require a brush. Then, rinse with a garden hose on the spray setting. Use a low water pressure and test it on a small area beforehand to ensure it doesn’t cause damage – a strong jet of water can make the surface of the wood visibly uneven.
